Biography
Raman Kalyan, also known as Flute Raman, is one of the word's leading flautists in the Carnatic style of music. Raman has captivated audiences in a number of India's major music festivals and toured widely in USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, and Japan. On several occasions, he has had the privilege of performing duets along with his Guru, the great flute maestro Dr. N. Ramani. Raman has also been very successful as a music composer, scoring music for over 50 albums. His most recent release "Music for Deep Relaxation" reached the #1 spot on the Apple iTunes World Music Charts, remaining in the top 50 albums for nearly six months. In addition to Carnatic music concerts, Raman also performs Jugalbandhi with North Indian classical musicians and East-West Fusion Concerts.
He has worked with great carnatic music stalwarts like Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna, Mandolin Shrinivas, Nedunoori Krishnamurthy, K.J. Yesudas, R.K. Srikantan, T.N.Seshagopalan, Dr.N.Ramani, Veena Doreswamy Iyengar, Kadri Gopalnath, Guruvayur Dorai and Srimushnum Raja Rao. He has performed Jugalbandhis with many popular Hindustani musicians like Pt Debi Prasad Chatterjee (Diciple of Smt Annapurna Devi), Nanda Kishore Muley (Disciple of Pandit Shivkumar sharma), Gaurav Mazumdar (Disciple of pandit Ravi Shankar), Deepakram (Disciple of Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia), great tabla maestro Anindo Chatterjee and has performed along with many Western Orchestras. He has collaborated with fusion and Jazz musicians including Dave Liebman, Dr.L.Subramaniam, Louis Banks, John Beasley, Darryl Jones, Nicholas Payton, John Beasley, Adam Holzman, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Ndugu Chancler & V. Selvaganesh Charlie Mariano, Rama Mani, Ranjit Barrot, Karl Peters and world renowned percussionists like Jamie Haddod , Glen Velez (Grammy award winner), and Lenny White. Raman has also composed music for many dance ballets and theatre productions and has worked in all genres of Bharathanatyam, Kuchipudi, Oddissi, & Khathak and has worked with Indian Dance like legends like the Dhananjayans, C.V Chandrashekar, Adayar K Lakshman, Manju Bharghavi. Raman has also rendered his accompaniment for Martha Graham's Documentary film "The flute of Krishna". He has accompanied for all the popular playback singers of Indian Cinema like Dr P.B. Sreenivos, S.P. Balasubramaniam, K.J. Jesudas, Chitra, S. Janaki, Dr. Rajkumar and has worked with all the famous music directors of Kannada Film Industry.
After Raman's initial training with Vidwan Mysore A.V. Prakash, he yearned to learn from the great flute maestro Dr. N. Ramani. Dr. N. Ramani is undoubtedly the topmost flute maestro in carnatic music today. He has been in the field for over 50 years and holds the most prestigious title of Sangeetha Kalanidhi, conferred upon him by the Music Academy, Chennai in 1996 as a climax to his illustrious career. Raman had the honor of playing with Dr. Ramani on numerous occasions throughout the country.
Raman has made valuable contributions to the kannada film industry. He has worked with the successful music directors like Hamsalekha, Rajan-Nagendra, Upendrakumar, Manohar, Rajesh Ramanthan, and Sadhu. Raman was specially featured in the re-recording of the box office hit movie "Janumada Jodi", which broke all previous Kannada box office records. Other successful films include Ramesh Aravind’s Thutta muttha, Gadibidi ganda, Tuvvi Tuvvi Tuvvi, Kaurava, Tavarina Tottilu. Raman has taken roles as an accompanist, composer and conductor for more than 400 commercial soundtracks.
